Yesterday, REIACT CEO Maria Edwards appeared before the Standing Committee on Environment and Planning for the Inquiry into the Role and Future of the Woden Town Centre in the Context of a Compact City.

On behalf of REIACT, Edwards made the following recommendations to the committee:

✅ Introduce minimum internal area and design standards to ensure that 1- and 2-bedroom apartments can function as long-term residences
✅ Incentivise developers who deliver larger and more flexible floorplates through planning tools or LVC adjustments
✅ Require an outcomes-based approach to housing that measures success by resident retention and economic, social and civic participation
✅ Reform the Unit Titles Management framework, provide support to the strata sector by establishing minimum education and licensing standards as well as for investors to stay in the market so that rental supply and pre-sales are sufficient to enable quality development

For investors, the message is clear: Canberra’s future supply will come as much from its existing suburbs as from new estates.
