INTERVIEW: HISTORICAL IMPLEMENTATION OF RENT CONTROLS IN ACT AND THE IMPACT ON HOUSING COSTS FOR TENANTS
REIACT CEO Maria Edwards in an interiew with The Australian pointed out that the historical implementation of rent controls in ACT actually resulted in increased housing costs for tenants. She explained that in uncertain economic times landlords with the restriction of rental increases limited to once a year naturally tend to adjust the rent to the maximum allowable rate to future proof their budgets from increasing property taxes, interest rates and compliance requirements.
